Harnois appeared in commercials and bit television roles before moving to Los Angeles with her family to audition for film roles. She made her big-screen debut in the 1985 Christmas fantasy film One Magic Christmas. The following year, she appeared in the 1986 mystery thriller film Where Are the Children.
She then appeared as Alice in The Disney Channel fantasy television series Adventures in Wonderland (1992-1994), based on Lewis Caroll's 1865 children's novel 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.'
