He was born as the eldest child to Maggie, a journalist and book editor, and Paul Taylor, a copywriter, and journalist. His parents divorced when Taylor was a teenager. His father later remarried Suzie Howie, a theatre publicist.
Taylor left home at the age of 16 and began acting before graduating from University High School in Melbourne. He then attended St. Martin's Youth Theater.
Taylor's time at St. Martin earned him a role in the 1987 film The Year My Voice Broke, in which he played Danny Embling. Taylor also reprised his role in its sequel, Flirting (1991), released four years later. Additionally, he received an 'Academy Award' nomination for both films.
