Barulich started dating the Colombian singer/songwriter sometime in 2017. The couple dated for more than a year before splitting in October 2019. While the two were still involved romantically, they attended Neymar's 26th birthday celebration in February 2018 where Maluma performed.

It is when Barulich first met the Brazilian star. After the first meeting, the two reportedly stayed in touch through social media. The two even got a matching infinity signed tattoo on their left thumb. 

Moreover, according to a February 2021 report Distractify, the Brazilian footballer approached the model first. He did it as soon as Barulich and Maluma's breakup news came out in October 2019.

Maluma then shut down his Instagram account the day after the video was released, citing several comments relating to the video on his posts. However, a month later, he reactivated his account and made a live broadcast on his Instagram account. The video had over 1.2 million views shortly after it was posted.

"What inspired me to write Hawái?" Maluma said in response to one of the first queries from the feed. "This song, I have to say it in this live, we wrote it as a combo. The first people who wrote it were Keityn, Micky, Bull Nene and Édgar (Barrera). Those were the ones who wrote it, those I didn't mention will excuse me," Maluma explained.

Barulich also addressed her previous relationship with Maluma and the controversy surrounding the success of 'Hawái,' saying she didn't know if the Colombian's hit was actually dedicated to her.

"I didn't believe anything about it. I don't know if he dedicated it to me, I heard that he did, but I also heard that he didn't, I don't really care, that's in the past and I want to leave it there. It was an experience in my life that I don't regret. But it's time to get over it, since we have been separated for a year," she stated.
