She began her career as an actress, appearing as Lindsay Sherwood in one episode of the CBS mystery comedy-drama series Simon & Simon in 1982. She went on to appear in guest-starring roles on television series The Powers of Matthew Star, Hill Street Blues, and Scarecrow and Mrs. King.
In 1988, Richards scored her first recurring role as Calerie Cooper in the CBS romantic drama series The Bold and the Beautiful. She appeared in 19 episodes of the series until 1990.
