Karen Pittman was born on 12 May 1976 in Mississippi and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. Pittman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Voice and Opera from Northwestern University and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University's Graduate Acting Program.
Pittman debuted her acting career in 2009 after appearing in the TV series Great Performances. The same year she was featured in other TV series such as 30 Rock, Law & Order, Kings, and Medium.
She played in several TV series and movies in the following years, such as White Collar (TV series 2010), Last Night (movie 2010), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (TV series 2010), One Life to Live (TV series 2011), The Bourne Legacy (movie 2012), The Good Wife (TV series 2013), House of Cards (TV series 2014), and more.

And Just Like That… is a comedy-drama series on HBO Max. It was first released on 9 December 2021 and is a ten-episode revival of the HBO series Sex and the City (1998).
The show revolves around the Sex and the City characters Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis). They browse through the hard reality of life and friendship in their thirties to even more difficulties in their fifties. In the series, Pittman portrayed the role of Dr. Nya Wallace.
In an interview with Today Magazine in 2021, Pittman mentioned she loves her character and is a departure from anything she has ever done. She added, "I have yet to do a comedy. She's very funny. She's a lot of fun to play. I think she is also super fashionable: braids, brown skin, a Black woman living in Brooklyn and I think it's going to be a lot of fun for women of color."

In an interview with The Interval in 2017, Pittman mentioned that her ex-husband supported her at grad school. She also stated that she had her daughter, Lena, after a year and a half out of grad school.
Pittman added, "I did not want to be a mom that was waiting until after my career was over to develop myself. I wanted to be doing it at the same time."
