Who is Carolyn Berry Condit?

Carolyn Berry Condit is an American woman and the wife of the former US congressman and author Gary Condit. She and her husband first rose to the media limelight in 2001 after Gary's name was involved in the murder case of Chandra Levy.

Reportedly, Gary had an extramarital affair with Chandra Levy, a 24-year-old girl who mysteriously vanished from Washington, D.C., in May 2001. After a year, the girl's dead body remains were later found in a park. Although he was not a suspect in the murder, he and his wife Carolyn received media attention for years to follow.

Carolyn Is An Oklahoma Native

Carolyn's birthday and childhood information are not found on authentic media sites. However, according to Celebrity Mirror, she is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. There, she grew up alongside her two younger siblings and parents.

Carolyn belonged to a higher-middle-class family. Her father had a designer clothing shop, which was the major income source for the family. She has disclosed no details of her mother to the media.

Carolyn attended Nathan Hale High School in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, for formal education. She was always one of the most popular girls in her school, given designer dresses gifted by her parents. According to her old friends from school, she was beautiful, kind, and fun-loving from a young age.

Carolyn Married Gary At The Age Of 18

During her junior year in high school, Carolyn fell in love with Gary. He had just moved with his parents from Woodland Junction to Tulsa.

She and Gary dated through their junior year at the high school. When Carolyn's parents found out about her relationship, they transferred her to another school in town to keep her away from him. However, it did not work.

The pair graduated from different high schools in 1966. After that, Carolyn attended the University of Tulsa. After her first year of university, she and Gary moved to Ottawa City and legally tied wedding knots in 1967. At that time, both of them were only 18 years old. 

However, the law in Oklahoma at the time stated that men should at least be 21 years old if they are getting married without parental consent. Thus, Gary inflated his age and registered himself as 25 years old.

Carolyn Is Still Married To Gary Condit

The high school sweethearts Carolyn and Gary are still together after 54 years of marriage. However, the pair came across several hurdles during their decades-long marriage. 

The most significant hurdles were Gary's alleged extramarital relationship with Chandra Levy. However, the pair together overcame it and are still married and currently live in Arizona.

From their marriage, the pair are parents to their two adult children, Chand and Cadee Condit. They both pursued political careers like their father.

Gary Condit Broke His Silence On Chandra Levy's Case After 15 Years

The former US congressman, Gary Condit, was accused of having an extramarital affair with the 2001 murder case victim, Chandra Levy. Condit denied all allegations against him and said that his relationship with her was only friendly.

Although the police and authorities did not list him as a suspect in the case, he continued to be on media attention because of his high-profile profession. The mixup of his name in the case cost him his entire political career.

After 15 years of silence, Gary finally opened up and spoke on Levy's case in an interview with Today in October 2016. He stated his relationship with Chandra Levy as a work colleague and that he did not know her outside of work. He said,

"I saw her one time outside the office, at a restaurant and she came by my condo once. Once, maybe twice, but again, I want to make clear there's nothing unusual about someone coming by my condo — a lot of people did, so people have made some speculation about that meaning something special."

Today also interviewed Levy's mother, Susan, the same month following Gary's interview. She disputed Gary's claims regarding his relationship with her daughter. She told Today that she knew they weren't just friends, and he was just trying to clear his name off the case. 

"I know otherwise, because I did talk to my daughter, and I found out who she was dating secretively because I was able to guess it. My heart is broken. And he's trying to clear his name, and that's OK," she said.

Carolyn Berry Condit Illness

Carolyn's health issue was one of the most discussed topics after May 2001, when her husband was accused of an extramarital affair with Chandra Levy. Reportedly, Gary had suggested to different women he had dated that his wife was sickly. Moreover, he used her medical condition as an excuse and justification for keeping extramarital affairs.

One of the women Gary had talked to about Carolyn's illness was the United Airlines Flight attendant, Anne Marie. He supposedly told her that Carolyn was suffering from encephalitis from the brain. In Anne Marie's words,

"I asked him if he was married, and he said yes. But he said, 'My wife's very ill.' She supposedly has encephalitis of the brain. And he said that their relationship was more of a friendship. He really, you know, cared about her, but he stayed with her more or less to take care of her."

However, Carolyn herself has never confirmed her medical condition with the media.
