The ‘Stargirl’ Backlashes

Stargirl is a superhero series created for television by Geoff Johns. Based on the DC Comics characters, the fantasy show follows a teenage girl Courtney Whitmore (played by Brec Bassinger), who joins the Justice Society of America.

Season 1 of the series premiered on 18 May 2020 on the DC Universe streaming service. The series premiered on The CW the following day.

Washington portrayed the role of Beth Chapel, a.k.a. Dr. Mid-Nite. In an interview with Looper in January 2022, she spoke about the backlash she faced when she was cast in this role. The actress said she knew that people wouldn’t like a Black woman playing a character who is traditionally seen as a white man.

She elaborated, “When they originally posted that I was going to be the new Doctor Mid-Nite, it got so many negative comments they actually had to delete the post. So I was very aware from the very beginning about everything that this would entail, being a Black female superhero, so I wasn’t surprised. A little disappointed, but it, indeed, was a conversation.”

Fortunately, Washington earned a devoted fan base after the show aired.

She plays Fareeda on Netflix 'Tall Girl'

Tall Girl is a Netflix original teen romantic comedy film, released on 13 September 2019. Written by Sam Wolfson and directed by Nzingha Stewart, the Netflix film follows a story of a 16-year-old tallest high school girl Jodi (played by Ava Michelle) who has always felt uncomfortable in her skin. However, all of that changes when she falls for an equally tall foreign exchange student Stig (played by Luke Eisner).

Stig gets Jodi’s quirky best male friend Dunkleman and his hippie mom as a host family. Consequently, Jodi gets entangled in a surprising love triangle. However, with the help of her two best friends and her sister, Jodi finally decides to find the confidence to stand tall.

Washington portrayed the role of one of Jodi’s best friends, Fareeda, in the Netflix film. She also reprised the role in its sequel, Tall Girl 2, released on the streaming platform on 11 February 2022.

Furthermore, Washington is close with her co-star Michelle and in an exclusive interview with the List, she disclosed that they often discuss the upcoming storyline of season 3.

She shared that the writers will focus more on the end of the high school after which their characters get split. She added that it would be a turn towards the exploration of their love and friendship. In her own words, "I would love to see the focus be less about boys and more about, like, sisterhood and friendship. Maybe, like, graduating high school, and they're about to go to college, and they're going to go separate ways. And what is that going to look like?"

While Michelle, on the other hand, added, "I would love to see this amazing supportive, powerful best friend relationship just really come out and be able to be shown. I just love working with her so much," Michelle told us. "And if I could work with her on another film and even more, that would make me really happy."
