Early Bio

Annie Lederman was born Anne Frances Lederman on 20 July 1983 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Her two fraternal twin brothers were born just two minutes before her.

Growing up in a neighborhood of Philadelphia, Lederman’s attended a Quaker school while growing up with learning disabilities. She revealed in the Des Bishop podcast in September 2016 that she was in the spectrum of “asperger” syndrome and was also diagnosed with attention deficit disorder during her time in school. She said she used to misuse the prescriptions given to her.

Her adolescence took a turn for the worse after she was involved in a car accident as a teenager. Before the accident, she was training to be a Junior Olympic swimmer. However, she had to forfeit the dream because of a foot injury from a car accident by a drunk driver.

Later, she attended a high school for delinquents who were involved in drugs and alcohol, and some of her classmates died due to heroin overdoses and motorcycle crashes. She has revealed in many of her interviews that a math teacher at the school sexually assaulted her. She and her friend had to testify against the teacher in court.

Post her graduation from high school at the age of seventeen, Lederman explored the jobs for a year that helped her to grow her inner self. She first did service work before participating in dolphin training in Hawaii and eventually worked with a nonprofit organization in Central America to help underprivileged children. She then went on to work for other nonprofit organizations, including Easterseals as a camp counselor and others that helped children with disabilities such as cerebral palsy and spina bifida.

Graduation and Drinking Problem

After the year she was involved in the service works, she joined The College of Santa Fe and eventually graduated from there with a major in arts and counseling in a total of 8 years. The college shut down two weeks after her graduation.

Her serious drinking problem haunted her during her time in college. She went through numerous blackout incidents, including one that led to severe injuries in a fatal accident on a motor scooter.

Early Interest In Comedy

She developed an interest in comedy at an early age. She was humorous and developed a strong sense of humor early, but she wasn’t sure if she could make it a professional comedian. She felt she had nothing to lose, despite her difficult childhood. Lederman used to crack jokes in class, inspired by her father’s witty personality.

Looking back on her childhood, Lederman shared in an interview, “My dad is super funny. I used to try to impress him. At college, I would make jokes in class. My professors would be like …’ just go do stand-up, stop interrupting us…just get the hell out of here.”

Early Career

In 2009, Lederman shifted to New York City to pursue a comedy career and became sober. She has admitted the sound of her fist-open microphone was frightening.

“It’s scary. Sometimes I still get scared. My very first open mic in New York I blacked out. I don’t remember anything. I had written a set-list which I dropped on the way to the stage. I think I just ended up yelling at people,” Lederman recalls the experience.

Relocating from New York to Los Angeles in 2016, she was struck by the cultural disparity. She is an interview said that New York was a “cut-throat” environment for her. In New York, she and her friends would act three to five times in one evening. In Los Angeles, on the other hand, people wanted to be heard, and “stand-up” was a simple way for them to do so

On 21 November 2011, she started a Youtube channel called Sausage Party alongside Abbey Luck. The Youtube channel recreated favorite movie scenes to a parody through favorite food characters.

Television

Following that, the working comedian landed a regular spot on Comedy Central’s Chelsea Lately and her own short-lived E! channel comedy infotainment series, We Have Issues

Later, she’s also appeared on MTV’s Girl Code and Comedy Central shows such as Chris Hardwick’s @Midnight, Carson Daly’s Last CallAdam Devine’s House Party, and This Is Not Happening
