Winans began singing at the International Gospel Center when she was eight years old, and as a teenager, Winans was a member of the International Sounds of Deliverance. However, her marriage to her second husband, Marvin, prompted Winans to pursue a professional career in music. 

As a result, she was requested to join Winans Part II, which comprised her then-in-laws BeBe and CeCe Winans and her brother Daniel Winans. However, the group never took off because BeBe and CeCe left to join the PTL Singers of The PTL Club, a long-running Christian television show.

Be Encouraged; her solo album was launched in 1987 and became an excellent gospel hit. The album contained a version of Dottie Rambo's 'We Shall Behold Him' and 'First Trumpet Sound,' a gospelized remake of Gladys Knight & the Pips' 'Midnight Train To Georgia.' Her follow-up albums included Total Victory (1989), The Lady (1991), Live in Detroit (1997), Live in Detroit II (1999), and Share the Laughter (1999).

After a brief hiatus released her album Bringing It All Together in 2003. The album also featured her notable single 'Shake Yourself Loose.' In addition, Winans spent over $200,000 on five music videos, independent radio teams, promotional marketing teams, and a 50-city promotional concert tour to promote the CD.

Bringing It All Together peaked at number one on Billboard's gospel music charts and spent nine weeks at the top of the charts and a full year in the top ten. The album also received eight 'Stellar Award' nominations, five of which it won and a Grammy nomination.

On 8 August 2006, her album Woman to Woman: Songs of Life was released. The CD also topped Billboard's gospel chart. Followed by it, Winans came with notable albums like Happy Holidays from Vickie Winans (2007), How I Got Over (2009), Radio One Family Comedy Tour, Vol.1 (2010), and many more.
