Early Age

TK Kirkland was born on 3 April 1961 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles and spent his adolescent years there. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University, where he also studied special communications. While there, he also competed in the 1984 Olympic trials (track).

Later, he joined California State University-Northridge for a master’s degree. Although he had planned to study pathology, he opted for management studies and matriculated with business administration and speech communications.

Comedy Career

TK Kirkland has performed alongside many celebrities, including Keyshia Cole, Eminem, Jay Z, Kid Rock, Van Diesel, Lil Wayne, and Eazy-E, in his long comedy career. 

Kirkland began his career on the road opening for the American hip-hop group N.W.A. in the 1980s. Ever since, his followers have dubbed him as the “Gangsta of Comedy.”

Acting and Music Videos

Kirkland began his on-screen career with the crime drama New Jersey Drive in 1995. In the late 1990s, he has also appeared in movies like Strays as Rodney (1997) and Rising to the Top as T.K. (1999). 

In 2000, he appeared in Baller Blockin’ as Lieutenant Gaspard. Later, he would be featured in the movies such as Champagne Gang (2006) and Are There Any Questions? (2008). In 2012, he played Joey in the film Birds of a Feather, and he also starred in the 2013 film Good Brutha Bad Brutha as Silk Tie Joe.

In addition, Kirkland has featured in music videos for artists such as N.W.A., the D.O.C., and 50 Cent, including ‘Express Yourself,’ ‘It’s Funky Enough,’ and ‘Window Shopper.’

In 2008, Kirkland released his first standup special titled Are There Any Questions?, which remained the most popular piece on Amazon for two months. He then launched two comedy albums, including Who Raised You? in 2019 and Gangsta Conversation in 2018. His first streaming special, Who Raised You? (2019) quickly became the most popular comedy event on Amazon Prime.
