Teacher Appreciation Week | Biography

Nevertheless, teaching is one of the oldest occupations in world history, and the foremost teacher in history was 561BC Confucius, who was the first private teacher. While children were highly valued in Ancient Greece, the Pilgrims placed a similar focus on the practice in the 1600s. Later after the revolutionary modernization, politicians began to feel that education was necessary for political order during the nineteenth century, and elementary through college education became popular and public, and the need for teachers became a tendency.

Teacher Appreciation Week is a national celebration in the United States of America in the first full week of May.

How did Teacher Appreciation Week Start?

Teacher Appreciation falls from 1 May to 8 May every year. Although Teacher's Day falls on 5 May, an entire week is allocated to commemorate the lifelong contribution of teachers in America.

The tradition of this week began in 1953, with Eleanor Roosevelt credited with its establishment. Then, Roosevelt persuaded Congress that teachers should be acknowledged on a special day. Before Roosevelt's appearance before Congress, it was understood that only some states practiced this appreciation week. Therefore, it has not been officially recorded in history, but either a teacher from Wisconsin or Arkansas wrote Roosevelt letters in an attempt to persuade her to support the cause of teachers.

While Arkansas proclaims that Mattye Whytte Wooldridge began engaging with authorities in the education system to create a day to celebrate teachers. She eventually started writing letters to Roosevelt. And Roosevelt determined that the matter was worthy of her attention and presented it to Congress.

However, even with Roosevelt presenting the case to Congress and receiving their assistance and support, it took another 27 years to regulate the teacher's appreciation week as an official national holiday. The National Education Association (NEA), founded in 1857, joined forces with the Kansas State and Indiana State Boards of Education in 1980 to urge Congress to have the day declared a national holiday.

Like the Public Service Recognition Week, the White House makes a formal Proclamation Statement on Teacher's Day as a national holiday.

So in the 2021 proclamation, President Biden focused on the support teachers provided during the pandemic, where schools had to resort to online mediums for education. In addition, he mentioned the dedication shown and offered by school workers on all levels who assisted in providing education to students who lacked the medium during the pandemic.

"Educators served both as facilitators of learning and as the technology support for their students, getting them up and running with access to fully remote learning. They often worked late into the day to support hard-to-reach children, and took the extracurriculars their students love and adapted them for remote and hybrid learning. Our teachers even found new ways to leverage technology platforms to coordinate with parents as partners in learning, keep a close eye on the development of their students, and build community by moving music rehearsals and sports practices online."
