The tradition of this week began in 1953, with Eleanor Roosevelt credited with its establishment. Then, Roosevelt persuaded Congress that teachers should be acknowledged on a special day. Before Roosevelt's appearance before Congress, it was understood that only some states practiced this appreciation week. Therefore, it has not been officially recorded in history, but either a teacher from Wisconsin or Arkansas wrote Roosevelt letters in an attempt to persuade her to support the cause of teachers.
While Arkansas proclaims that Mattye Whytte Wooldridge began engaging with authorities in the education system to create a day to celebrate teachers. She eventually started writing letters to Roosevelt. And Roosevelt determined that the matter was worthy of her attention and presented it to Congress.
However, even with Roosevelt presenting the case to Congress and receiving their assistance and support, it took another 27 years to regulate the teacher's appreciation week as an official national holiday. The National Education Association (NEA), founded in 1857, joined forces with the Kansas State and Indiana State Boards of Education in 1980 to urge Congress to have the day declared a national holiday.

McDonald's Teacher Appreciation Week
In 2021, from 1 to 15 October, McDonald provided complimentary breakfast 'Thank You Meals' to teachers and school workers. They entitled the meal 'Thank You Meal' Monday, which could be ordered by educational workers from their locations nationwide during breakfast hours.
They also added that a valid work ID is required to receive the free meals. The meals will be provided in a classic Happy Meal box with a choice of one entree, hash potatoes, and a beverage.
