Franklin Shea Whigham Jr. was born on 5 January 1969 in Tallahassee, Florida, USA, to father Frank, an attorney, and mother, Beth. His family relocated to Lake Mary in Florida when he was 5. Whigham then moved to Texas to study at Tyler Junior College and later graduated from the State University of New York in an acting program.
Immediately after his studies, Whigham collaborated with his colleague Kirk Acevedo and co-founded a theatre troupe named The Rorschach Group. He served there for around three years as a director and actor and moved on to feature on TV and in films.

In 1997, Whigham debuted on television with a minor role in the horror TV series Ghost Stories. Soon, he began appearing on numerous TV shows, movies, and video games.
