On 21 March 1982, he was born to Sharon Marie and Ernest John in Stockton, USA. Fontana's father is an agriculture expert, while his mother serves as a school teacher. He attended Richland High School in Washington for formal education. He also studied theatre and performing arts at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Later, he received a Fine Arts degree in 2004 from the University of Minnesota.
