On 21 March 1982, he was born to Sharon Marie and Ernest John in Stockton, USA. Fontana's father is an agriculture expert, while his mother serves as a school teacher. He attended Richland High School in Washington for formal education. He also studied theatre and performing arts at Interlochen Center for the Arts. Later, he received a Fine Arts degree in 2004 from the University of Minnesota.

The 39 years old actor and his wife are currently parenting their only daughter Grace Fontana. Their baby girl was born on 24 December 2019.
