Prior to making his name in the culinary industry, Mooking worked several years as a musician. He was associated with The Maximum Definitive, a hip-hop band in Edmonton, Canada. The band is best known for its 'Juno Award'-nominated song 'Jungle Man.'
He later moved to Ontario-based R&B band Bass is Base following the disbanding of his former group. Moreover, Mooking has launched his independent solo music albums like Soul Food (2008) and Feedback (2013).
Mooking's rise to TV fame began in 2008 as the host and creator of Magee TV culinary show, Everyday Exotic. He is also the host of Man Fire Food (2012-Present). Roger Mooking was born to his mother, Gemma, and father Allay Mooking, on 14 December 1973 in Trinidad and Tobago. His father, Allay, is of Chinese descent, while his mother holds Trinidadian Nationality.
Although born in a Caribbean country, he later relocated to Canada with his family at five years old. His parents owned a restaurant business in Edmonton, where he learned about different European flavors with his mother.

Mooking has been married to his wife, Leslie Mooking, for 14 years now. They eloped and later exchanged wedding vows on 16 October 2007 in front of his family in Tobago. The couple initially met at East End restaurant and dated for two years before getting married.

On 16 October 2020, Roger took to his Facebook account to wish his wife on their 13 marriage anniversary. "It's our #anniversary - lucky 13. So many absolutely crazy ups and downs," he wrote.
Mooking and his wife are parents of four children, all daughters. In an interview with cookingchanneltv.com when the reporter asked Mooking about how he encourages his children to try different foods. He said that his family goes to the grocery store together every time to buy something new. They bring the new cuisine home and have everyone in the family taste it.
