Oakes kicked off her acting career with a cameo appearance in the TV series McCloud (1976). She then went on to guest star in other TV series such as Delvecchio (1976), Switch (1975-1978), Battlestar Galactica (1978), Barnaby Jones, B.J. and the Bear (1979), and more.
Oakes also acted in the movies Telethon in 1977, Twin Detectives in 1976, and Lovers and Other Strangers in 1983. In addition, she played recurring roles in the TV series CHiPs (1977-1982) and Rosetti and Ryan (1977).
