He was born on 17 August 1959 as the eldest of three children. His father, Peter Osei Mensah, was an engineer, while his mother was a writer. Mensah’s family relocated from Chiiraa, Ghana, to Hertfordshire, England, while he was still very young.
Growing up in England, Mensah was attracted to martial arts, and he began practicing it from the age of six. Later, Mensah graduated with an engineering degree and worked as an engineer. However, he left the job and entirely focused on being an actor.

Mensah began his acting career with the 1995 TV series Nancy Drew. In the subsequent years, he did single-episode roles on several TV shows, including Once a Thief (1997), La Femme Nikita (1998), Earth: Final Conflict (1998), and Highlander: The Raven (1999).
