Hinwood became popular after the release of the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Before that, he once appeared as Hermes in 1968 on the Greek mythology mini-series Odissea. He also played a minor role in the 1970 film Tam Lin and the 1976 movie Sebastiane. Hinwood then briefly modeled for magazines and clothing lines in London.

In The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Hinwood played the role of Rocky Horror, who was a creation of the scientist Dr. Frank-n-Furter. The movie happened to be a breakthrough in his acting career as he had played the titular character in the movie.
