Early Life

Nova Leigh Paholek, professionally known as Nova Rockafeller, was born on 22 July 1988 in Edmonton. But, she had spent her childhood in Jamaica

Her family had moved there, intending to start a water sports business. She also lived for a short time in Toronto and New York City.

Rockafeller dropped out of high school and spent considerable time at the Edmonton Youth Emergency Shelter. She claimed that she got interested in rap while living in a series of shelter homes in Edmonton. Rockafeller soon began participating in online rap fight forums. Her father and brother, who are active in the Edmonton music scene, also lent her their support.

Career

Rockafeller began rapping at the age of 15 while living in a group home. She confessed she felt envious of the boys when they did freestyle, which was something she wanted to do. She had been writing songs on the CD cover while traveling to her job location and made a point to get a microphone for her 17th birthday.

Soon, Rockafeller began publishing all her music in the internet forums and YouTube, after which she learned to embrace criticism. But, according to her, she never encouraged bad remarks that didn't help her grow as an artist and a performer.

As an upcoming rapper, Paholek was given the pseudonym Nova Rockafeller, at a gathering of rappers when there was a need for her to have a new name.

In 2011, Roackafeller launched her debut album, Insufficient Funds. In 2012, The Pirate Bay's The Promo Bay published Rockafeller's song 'call me (BATMAN) 347-574-7192' on the front page.
