Hexum eventually realized the necessity of releasing albums to get exposure. So, he started his own record label called What Have You Records and then released 311’s debut studio album 'Dammit!' in 1990. The band later released two other independent releases such as 'Unity' (1991) and 'Hydroponic EP' (1992), before signing a record deal with Capricorn Records in 1992. Then their following albums, 'Music' (1993) and 'Grassroots' (1994) achieved moderate success.


Hexum is an American singer-songwriter and musician. He is the vocalist and guitarist of the rock band 311 and The Nick Hexum Quintet.

Who is Nick Hexum?

Nicholas Lofton Hexum, in short, Nick Hexum, was born on 12 April 1970 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Pat and Dr. Terry Hexum. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he attended Westside High School. During high school, he was in the school’s concert jazz band. And also played in several local musical groups, including The Extras, The Eds, The Right Profile, and Unity. 

Hexum left for a music career in Los Angeles when he was just a teenager. However, he did not land any deals for a couple of years until he was offered a band-group agreement from Omaha itself. Subsequently, he returned to Omaha and formed a rock band called 311 in 1988 with his friends Chad Sexton (drummer), Jim Watson (lead guitarist), and Aaron Wills (bassist). And their first independent release was recorded in Hexum’s basement titled Downstairs EP of 1989.

Hexum eventually realized the necessity of releasing albums to get exposure. So, he started his own record label called What Have You Records and then released 311’s debut studio album Dammit! in 1990. The band later released two other independent releases such as Unity (1991) and Hydroponic EP (1992), before signing a record deal with Capricorn Records in 1992. Then their following albums, Music (1993) and Grassroots (1994) achieved moderate success.

While, in 1995, the band released their eponymous album, which consisted of successful singles ‘Down’ and ‘All Mixed Up.’ The band went on to release additional albums such as Transistor (1997), Soundsystem (1999), From Chaos (2001), Evolver (2003), Don’t Tread on Me (2005), Uplifter (2009), Universal Pulse (2011), Stereolithic (2014), Mosaic (2017), and Voyager (2019).

And in America, they sold over nine million albums, whereas most of their albums peaked at the Top 10 position in Billboard’s ‘Top Album Sales’ chart. In addition to 311, Hexum was also involved in a side-project called Nick Hexum Quintet. In 2013, he paired up with his brother Zack Hexum to release the Nick Hexum Quintet debut album, My Shadow Pages
