Hamed made the professional debut of his boxing career in the flyweight division at the age of 18 in 1992. In May 1994, he won the European bantamweight title, beating Vincenzo Belcastro over 12 rounds. He retained the European bantamweight title in August 1994 in the game against Antonio Picardi. He then won several WBC (World Boxing Council) International super-bandwidth titles from 1994 to 1995.

Who is Naseem Hamed?

Born on 12 February 1974 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England, Naseem Hamed grew up with his Yemeni parents. He took boxing training from renowned Irish boxing trainer Brendan Ingle in his Wincobank gym and showed his talent and bold southpaw style at a very young age.

Hamed made the professional debut of his boxing career in the flyweight division at the age of 18 in 1992. In May 1994, he won the European bantamweight title, beating Vincenzo Belcastro over 12 rounds. He retained the European bantamweight title in August 1994 in the game against Antonio Picardi. He then won several WBC (World Boxing Council) International super-bandwidth titles from 1994 to 1995. 

Hamed held multiple WBO (World Boxing Organization) titles in the featherweight division from 1995 to 2000 with 15 title defenses. In 1997, he won three IBF (International Boxing Federation)  featherweight titles. He also won the WBC featherweight title in 1999 and the lineal featherweight title from 1998 to 2001. 

Hamed boxed in 37 fights in his career and had only one loss in the IBO (International Boxing Organization) featherweight division in 2001. He won 36 games - 31 of them by knockout and five by decision. He retired from his professional boxing career in 2002 at age 28.

Hamed was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in the 1999 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his contribution to boxing. However, he was stripped of his M.B.E. on 2 January 2007 due to a conviction for dangerous driving.

Later, he was jailed for 15 months in May 2006 for dangerous driving following a crash that left another driver critically injured. However, he was freed from prison after serving just 16 weeks on 4 September 2006.  

Later, in 2014, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
