Then, in the late 1990s, he was a finalist for the role of young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menace, but Jake Lloyd beat him out.
In 2000, Angarano appeared in Cover Me: Based on the True Life of an FBI Family at 12. He then landed his first significant film role in Little Secrets the following year, opposite Evan Rachel Wood and David Gallagher. Angarano also starred in the Nickelodeon TV movie Maniac Magee three years later. Subsequently, he portrayed the lead role in the 2005 film Sky High.
