Heholt also served as the executive director of her husband’s non-profit organization, The Dreamville Foundation, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, which helps youth discover their limitless potential through educational programs and activities.

In an old interview with Karla With A Kay regarding the charity, she stated: “The Dreamville Foundation was started in October 2011 based in Fayetteville to reveal to the youth their limitless potential through positive experiences, whether it is an event or program.”

Early Bio & Career Beginnings

Melissa Heholt was born in the USA on 10 October 1987 as the eldest of four children of her parents.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health administration from St. Johns University in Queens, New York. Heholt later graduated with a master’s degree in elementary education. 

In an interview with Karla With A Kay in September 2013, Heholt said she worked in a few unfulfilled jobs. She also taught for a brief time before switching her career to event planning. She initially worked as an intern for a lifestyle and marketing agency called Team Epiphany.

Heholt performed so well during her two-month internship that the agency soon hired her as a freelancer. She later started her own event planning company called Statice Events. She says ‘Statice’ is a play on words of ‘status’ and is a kind of flower that represents success.

How Did J. Cole and Melissa Heholt Meet?

Melissa Heholt and J. Cole both have been secretive about their personal life. According to the Sun, the two apparently met in college while attending St. John’s University in Queens, New York, and quickly became college sweethearts. 

After dating for a few years, rumors of an engagement between them surfaced in 2010, but no one ever saw a ring. Later in 2015, various sites revealed that Cole proposed to Heholt with a four-carat diamond ring. 

The pair kept their marriage secret until the filmmaker Ryan Coogler spilled the beans during an interview with Cole for the MLK Now event in January 2016. The filmmaker asked Cole how getting married changed him, but he quickly realized that he had a slip-up. 

He then apologized, explaining he had never interviewed anyone before. In response, Cole said, “It’s all good… They know now.”

Heholt and Cole have two children together, both sons. The notoriously private rapper revealed about their first son in an interview with radio host Angie Martinez in May 2018. 

A year later, in July 2019, Cole announced that his second child was on the way, revealing in the closing lyrics of his song’ Sacrifices.’ A year later, he confirmed in a personal essay titled ‘The Audacity’ published on The Players Tribune that he has two sons.
