Mark Chao was born on 25 September 1984 in Taipei, Taiwan. His father, Allen Chao, is a famous actor and television host. Mark graduated from the University of Victoria, Canada.
Chao launched his professional acting career in 2009, portraying the lead role as Hero Wu in the Taiwanese crime drama television series Black & White. For his work, Chao won the 'Golden Bell Award' for 'Best Leading Actor.'
After the successful start, Chao made his film debut in the critically acclaimed 2010 action crime drama film Monga, which earned him the 'Asian Film Award' for 'Best New Performer.'
In 2017, Chao appeared in the television series Three Lives Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossom, and Midnight Food Store. His film credits include Caught in the Web (2012), Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe (2015), and The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (2020).
The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity was released on 24 December 2020 in China. The country halted its screening shortly after its release, following the rumors of plagiarism.

Chao is married to Chinese actress Yuanyuan Gao. Gao made her acting debut in the 1997 film Spicy Love Soup as a schoolgirl. She later appeared in over a dozen films, including Beijing Bicycle (2001), Spring Subway (2002), Shanghai Dreams (2005), Rob-B-Hood (2006), City of Life and Death (2009), Don't Go Breaking My Heart 2 (2014), and Let's Get Married (2015).
Gao also appeared in multiple television series, including Yi tian tu long ji (2003) and Da Qin Di Guo (2009). During the late 2010s, Gao took a break from acting to concentrate on commercials. In 2021, she returned to acting and appeared in the television series Guang rong yu meng xiang (2021). Gao will appear in the upcoming film Sons of the Neon Night, which is in the post-production phase as of December 2021.
Chao and Gao began their romantic relationship while co-starring as a couple in the cyberbullying drama film Caught in the Web (2012). Child
After five years of their marriage, on 8 April 2019, Chao announced on a Chinese microblogging website, Weibo that Gao is pregnant. "Whenever people asked us (about having a baby), we would always give the same answer," he wrote on Weibo. He added, "Now, we can say: 'Yes, thank you for the blessings that you've showered on us all this time.'"
The couple later welcomed their daughter on 21 May 2019.
