Mario Manuel Cristobal is an American football coach and former football player.
He was born on 24 September 1970 in Miami, Florida.
From 1989 through 1992, Cristobal was an offensive lineman for the football team, Miami Hurricanes, earning national titles in 1989 and 1991. Subsequently, in 1994, he attempted to join the Denver Broncos team as an undrafted rookie free agent but was unsuccessful. So, Cristobal spent two seasons in NFL Europe and ventured into his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Miami in 1998. Eventually, he got his first head coaching job with Florida International University (FIU) in 2007.
As the FIU's performance deteriorated during the 2012 season, Cristobal was sacked. However, Pete Garcia, who was the athletic director at that time, was chastised for overreacting and taking upon the grave decision of suspension. Nonetheless, he had his next venture ready. Cristobal became an offensive line coach at Alabama and helped the Crimson Tide win the national championship in 2015. As of now, he is the head coach at the University of Oregon.
Salary
Cristobal's new six-year deal for $27 million with the University of Oregon's Oregon Ducks was approved by the board in December 2020. According to the deal, his initial contract got extended for another two years through the 2025 season.
In January 2021, his compensation was boosted from $2.7 million to $4.3 million, and Cristobal was expected to earn an average of $4.55 million for the course of the term. He also gained the option of exercising a $5 million deal for the 2026 season if the Ducks team brought home the regular-season game's trophy, either in 2021, 2022, or 2023 or win ten games in 2024 or win the Pac-12 North in any of those four seasons.
Abiding by the deal, after the Ducks won their ninth regular-season game in November 2021, Cristobal got his contract extended for another year till 2026. The contract indicated that he would earn $4.75 million, with an addition of $250,000 as a retention incentive.
He has also received $350,000 as performance incentives in the 2021 season. If Oregon makes it to the CFP National Championship game, Cristobal's bowl participation bonus would increase to $375,000, and his maximum performance incentives will be $1.675 million.
