His coaching career entails his designation as a graduate assistant at Brigham Young University from 1985 to 1986, the defensive coordinator at the college of eastern Utah in 1987, and linebackers/special teams and defensive coordinator at Idaho State from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
At the University of Utah Utes, he was the defensive line coach (1994), defensive coordinator safeties from 1995 to 1996 and 1998 to 2000, defensive coordinator linebackers in 1997, and again from 2001 to 2004. Whittingham is presently the head football coach at the University of Utah Utes from 2005 to the present.
