Herbstreit got married to his wife, Allison Butler, on 13 June 1998. The couple met in college when Butler was a cheerleader while he played for Ohio State. Soon after, they began dating while in college.
They have four sons together; their eldest are twins Tye and Jake, born in 2000, followed by Zak in 2003, and the youngest Chase in 2006.
All of their children are athletes, and all of them graduated high school from Montgomery Bell High School. However, while Tye and Jake chose to play for the Clemson Tigers of Clemson University, Zak joined Ohio State in late 2020. Similarly, the youngest brother, Chase, chose St. Xavier Cincinnati as a freshman quarterback.
In 2004, Herbstreit and Butler donated their house in Ohio to the fire department for routine training and burn down exercise. Unfortunately, although the house was given for a charitable cause, the burn-down practice of the department destroys the property, leaving only the land for the owners.
Under the then prevailing levies of tax laws, their charitable actions were subjected to a tax reduction of the calculated amount. However, in 2005, the IRS denied the Herbstreit’s reduction claims of $330,000. As a result, they sued the IRS in March 2009.
Further information on the case has not been updated because the case has remained in due process, and neither Herbstreit nor Butler commented on the lawsuit.
