Ferentz is currently affiliated with the University of Iowa as its head football coach. He has been in the position since the 1999 season and is the university’s 26th recruit for the designation. Before this, Ferentz served as the head football coach at the University of Maine (from 1990 to 1992).

Amidst his stint at Maine, he carried the record of 12–21. His coaching experience further entails his tenure as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). Besides, he has been the longest-tenured FBS (NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision) coach with a single program since 2017, and as of September 2018, he was Iowa’s all-time victories leader.

He was a footballer before he began his coaching career. He was a member of the football team of his high school, Upper St. Clair High School, and the University of Connecticut, from where he graduated. From 1974 through 1976, he played as a linebacker (an academic all-Yankee Conference linebacker) for the University of Connecticut and was its football captain as well.

Similarly, Steven played football in college and now works for the Miami Dolphins as an offensive quality control coach.

Ferentz’s daughters are more inclined towards conventional career choices. Kelly received her JD and MHA (Master of Healthcare Administration) degrees from the University of Iowa in 2010–11, while Joanne received her bachelor’s degree from The University of Iowa in 2010.
