Delaney's father worked as a committeeman for the United Auto Workers at Delphi Automotive. She has two younger brothers, Keith and Patrick, and two older brothers, Ed and John.
Delaney began her modeling career during her high school days, working for the Elite modeling agency. After graduation, Kim continued modeling in Philadelphia and then moved to New York City, quickly winning commercials. She also studied acting with William Esper in New York.

He said, "I attempted to keep her from driving her car, but she was very demanding. My mother demanded that my friend go with us. He refused to drive with her because she was drunk. Unfortunately, this is not the only incident in which I have seen my mother drunk."
Delaney's custody was revoked after Jack's testimony, and she checked into the Promises rehab center in Malibu after the ruling. Prior to this incident, Delaney was arrested for drunk driving on 26 January 2002.
