Worked for Walt Disney Animation, Pixar Animation, and Cartoon Network

In 2012, Cressida was diagnosed with a deadly tumor that caused risky, previously unheard-of surgery. Her cancer, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, was so uncommon that all the specialists insisted her tumor was either completely harmless or so fatal that it was inoperable and she would die within a year. Who is Kat Cressida?

Kat Cressida is an American voice and professional actress born on 1 March 1968 in Long Beach, California, USA.

Cressida’s passion for performing began as a child when she followed her father to Disney meetings. She was doing everything from Broadway musicals to Shakespeare by the age of ten, leading to a UC Berkeley scholarship.

Her interest at Berkeley extended to communication, Shakespeare, and the written word relevant to the modern age. Eventually, Cressida graduated from the University of Berkeley in 1992 with a double major in journalism and theater craft with honors and was enlisted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Cressida initially began her professional career as an actress and appeared in several TV series such as Murder, She Wrote (1994), M.A.N.T.I.S. (1995), The Crew (1995), The Naked Truth (1995), Babylon 5 (1994-1996), and many more.

In the 1999 TV movie Dexter’s Laboratory: Ego Trip, she voiced Dee Dee’s character. The following year, Cressida was featured in a princess’s voice in the movie Whispers: An Elephant’s Tale.

Cressida went on to voice several characters in several movies, video games, and TV shows such as Dexter’s Laboratory (TV series 1996-2003), World of Warcraft (video game 2004), Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (video game 2005), Tales from Earthsea (movie 2006), VeggieTales (TV series 2007), Phineas and Ferb (TV series short 2011-2012), and others.

However, Cressida is best known for voicing the character Henchwoman in the TV series Gotham Stories (2016) and Charlotte, Kluri, Yufine, and Vivian in the video game Epic Seven (2018).

Her most recent voice credits include Solar Opposites (TV series 2021) and Minecraft: Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Adventure DLC (video game 2021).

She Battled a Rare Cancer

Cressida overcame a rare form of cancer in a body part that affected both her life and career.

“The worst of it was I was being told by everybody, including him, that they’re not really going to know until they get in there,” Cressida remembered in a 2019 interview with Los Angeles Daily News. “There was no X-ray, no machine in existence at that point to figure out where exactly it was behind my jaw. Really, it’s the only place in the body where there’s so much intersecting at the same location: key nerves, key sensory mechanisms.”

However, it was only after her insistence and several rounds of tests and biopsies that it was correctly diagnosed and underwent an operation in early January 2013. After the operation, the left side of Cressida’s head swelled to around three times its normal size. But, on the other hand, she kept her career going as much as possible.

In Cressida’s home studio, she’d piece together the occasional audition tape or ESPN spot. But, even though her voice had been saved, it took months to retrain the processes that made her sound like herself. Cressida even listened to the old tapes of herself to hear how she needed to sound.

Her progression focuses on understanding the challenges of returning to one’s life and work after great hardship, loss, and suffering.

She Started Public Speaking After Recovering From Cancer

Cressida is also an accomplished public speaker. She told how she was diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in 2012 and how she spent the next two years undergoing life-threatening operations and specialized treatment to re-learn how to speak so she could continue her job.

She has since talked to audiences amid their cancer recoveries, PTSD recovery, and speech difficulties.  Moreover, Cressida was also invited by Ted X to share her journey in 2020.
