Joan serves as the CEO at Hose McCann Communications, formerly known as Hose-McCann Telephone Co. Charles G. Hose and Thomas J. McCann originally founded the company in Brooklyn, New York, in 1923. The two brought forth a communication system for naval usage, for which they were granted a patent.

Moreover, the US Military adopted the company's technology, which was described as "virtually indestructible," according to the official website. Additionally, one of the Hose-McCann telephone systems was discovered in excellent working condition onboard the WWII Liberty Ship SS Brown in 1994. The Grande family later bought the firm in 1964 and relocated it to Deerfield Beach, Florida, to be closer to the expanding maritime industry.

When the bomb exploded, Joan was still seated in her front-row position and helped take several of Ariana's terrified young fans backstage. She invited a group of approximately ten kids that sat around her to come backstage as the commotion of people running for exits began. She and Ariana's security team escorted the crowd backstage and waited for them to exit the venue safely.
