Early Life and Education

Jermall Charlo was born on 19 May 1990 in Lafayette, Louisiana, to Kevin Charlo, a former boxer, and Terrie Charlo. He was raised in Houston alongside his twin brother, Jermell Charlo, who is a minute older than him. Jermell also has a younger sister.

The twin boys were just eight years old when their father took them to the gym for the first time to provide them with a good and disciplined atmosphere. Jermall was serious about his gym training from day one. He didn't put much effort into socializing. Instead, he was keenly focused on his training in pursuit of being a world champion boxer.

Hastings High School was the alma mater of both the brothers. They participated in various sports such as football and basketball in high school yet always reverted to boxing when it came to passion.

Boxing

Jermall has spent his whole life boxing alongside his twin brother Jermell. They obstinately abide by the slogan "Lions Only" and have been keeping pace with the slogan since the beginning of their 154-pound category matches.

Jermell went professional in 2007, while Jermall waited to rise from his amateur standing and hoped to compete in the 2008 Olympics. However, a toe injury made him back out from the competition. He then participated in the amateur competitions for one more year and finished it with a 65 wins 6 loses record. Despite starting his professional career nine months after his brother, Jermall became the first Charlo twin to win a world championship before stepping up to 160 pounds, where he has been the WBC Middleweight Champion since 2019.

Jermall has fought 32 matches which sum up to 171 rounds of boxing in his professional career, winning all 32, losing 0, and holding 0 draw games as of 10 October 2021. With a knockout percentage of 68.75, he carries the statistic of 22 knockouts to date.

Overview of a couple of matches

Charlo, who had a record of 20 wins and 0 defeats with 16 knockouts (KOs) in 2014, beat Lenny Bottai (22-3, 9KOs) in two rounds in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior middleweight eliminator contest in 2014.

In the initial round, Charlo busted up Bottai, causing a gash above his eye. Charlo pounded Bottai with a left hook towards the crown of his head in the second, and he went down hard. The Bottai fight was called off when Bottai's corner surrendered.

Similarly, in a June 2021 bout with Mexican boxer Juan Montiel, Charlo held the WBC belt and celebrated yet another triumph.

While Montiel continued swapping stances, Charlo selected his strikes early in the bout. Charlo injured Montiel in the fifth and sixth rounds with powerful blows in the first minute of each round. Montiel, on the other hand, refused to give up. Instead, he chose to trade blows and tried slipping in a strong left hook amidst Charlo's aggressive assault. Montiel appeared to strike with a body shot in the 11th round.

Even though he had the least chance of winning until the last round, Montiel continued to throw heavy blows in the hopes of changing the score. But, the match was won by Charlo, and he referred to Montiel as a "warrior" in a Showtime interview in 2021.
