Who is Jay Moriarity?

Jay Moriarity was a surfer and adventurer born on 16 June 1978 in Augusta, GA. He was recognized as a flexible surfer who enjoyed all elements of surfing and was not restricted to a shortboard or a longboard. He was also a swimmer, paddler, diver, and fisherman.

Moriarity learned to surf when he was nine years old, and his first waves were at Sewer Peak. After achieving success as a young surfer, he got increasingly interested in surfing Mavericks, north of Santa Cruz in Half Moon Bay. Moriarity began surfing Mavericks at 15 after intensive physical and mental training with his master and close friend and Mavericks regular Frosty Hesson. He quickly established himself as a respected regular in the line-up. When he was 16, his wipeout at Mavericks was caught on film and featured on the cover of Surfer magazine.

In 2001, Moriarity and Chris Gallagher co-authored the book 'The Ultimate Guide to Surfing.'

Chasing Mavericks, a film directed by Curtis Hanson about Moriarity's life was released on 26 October 2012, with Jonny Weston playing Moriarity.

How Did Jay Moriarity Die?

Moriarity drowned in a free diving mishap in the Indian Ocean a day before his 23rd birthday on Friday, 15 June 2001, off the coast of Maldives' island, Lohifushi. He went free diving alone in Lohifushi for an O'Neill picture shoot, but he was never seen again. Finally, late Friday night, a search party discovered his body.

The Jay Moriarity Paddleboard Race, often known as "The Jay Race," an annual paddleboard race, is held in Capitola, California, in Moriarity's honor every year. In addition, pleasure Point hosted a memorial for him after his death. Jay's entire family, friends, wife, Kim, and mentor, Frosty, were all in attendance.
