Coaston began her journalism career as a staff writer at St. Louis Post in 2009. After around a year there, she interned for five months at The Chronicles of Higher Education and spent another year with Arabella Advisors as their staff writer and editor. Coaston's first job as a political reporter was with MTV Networks. She joined their Washington DC Metro Area office in February 2016 and worked there for around one and a half years. 


Jane Coaston is a renowned American political reporter and podcast host. She has primarily gained fame as an editor and host of The New York Times' podcast The Argument.

Who is Jane Coaston?

Jane Coaston is an American journalist best recognized as the co-host of the podcast, The Argument. Moreover, she is the former Senior Politics Reporter of Vox Media, Inc.

Coaston began her journalism career as a staff writer at St. Louis Post in 2009. After around a year there, she interned for five months at The Chronicles of Higher Education and spent another year with Arabella Advisors as their staff writer and editor.

Coaston's first job as a political reporter was with MTV Networks. She joined their Washington DC Metro Area office in February 2016 and worked there for around one and a half years. 

Moreover, while at MTV Networks, she covered several important events in American politics, including the 2016 election.

She then joined Vox Media Inc. in November 2017 and held the position of Senior Politics Reporter for approximately three years. At Vox, Coaston's primary role was to cover news related to Grand Old Party (G.O.P.). In addition, she also put her focus on white nationalism and conservatism.

Subsequently, she left Vox in November 2020 and joined The New York Times shortly after. As of now, her tenure at The New York Times spans approximately one year and four months.

He Grew Up in a Mixed Ethnic Family

Jane Coaston has not disclosed her age in the public/media. However, one of her fans wished her birthday via a tweet and tagged her on her Twitter account. According to which, her birthday falls every year on 4 September.

Coaston took birth in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in a mixed ethnic family as her mother is white while her father belongs to a black community. 

Her father was a librarian, and her mother has previously worked for the welfare of abandoned and abused children. Moreover, her parents raised her to become a devout catholic.

Her grandfather was a member of the only Black U.S. Army regiment to arrive on D-beaches. Day's Coaston's grandmother, whose childhood home was set on fire by the Ku Klux Klan, was one of the first Black persons to work at the Pentagon and desegregated the church where her family worshipped.

Her junior years and high school details are not present on any authentic sites regarding education. However, she has shared about her higher education on LinkedIn.

Coaston attended the University of Michigan from 2005 to 2009 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Political Science. Moreover, while at the University, she earned the 'Best Oral Presentation' of Thesis Award for her presentation of Nazi Propaganda.

Host of 'The Argument'

The Argument is a podcast on the New York Times official website nytco.com. It first started in 2018 with the sole purpose of providing answers to the most argumentative question: "How could anyone possibly think that way?"

Over the run of around four years to date, the podcast has included several famous hosts, including Frank Bruni, Michelle Goldberg, David Leonhardt, and Ross Douthat. They've established a dedicated audience and have over 100 episodes.

Then in November 2020, the former Vox politics reporter Coaston joined The New York Times as their new editor and new host of their podcast The Argument.

Since January 2021, she has spent over a year as the podcast's host.

Reportedly, her aim as the show host is to bring more external viewpoints and opinions in answering the questions. In her April 2021 interview with washingtonpost.com, she said,

add a lot of external viewpoints that maybe haven't been as well represented on the show, because it has been very much about the left, right, and center perspectives that are featured at the Times largely.

Married to Her Wife

Coaston has identified herself as a queer. She doesn't have a husband. However, she is married to her partner Jefcoate Odonnell since 2 May 2015. 

As of now, the couple is around three months from completing seven years of marriage. On their fifth wedding anniversary, Coaston posted a picture with her partner on her Instagram handle @janecoastan on 2 May 2020. Alongside the picture, she wrote,

Today is our fifth wedding anniversary. Still in love.
