Hurricane Preparedness Week
In 2021, USGS, NOAA, and NHC, with other agencies, worked to develop an assertive and accurate medium from which people can access weather information. They aimed to make individuals improve their property, daily lives, community, and resources from the medium which can safeguard them from disasters.
A week is dedicated to aware American people regarding the disasters caused by hurricanes.
What is Hurricane Preparedness Week?
The week in the month of May, the United States government takes initiatives to make people aware of the destruction and harms hurricanes can cause during the season. This informs people to prepare family survival kits, adequate food storage, and disaster preparations, among other precautionary steps.
This week has been allocated as National week, falling from 16 May to 22 May every year. And the Bush Administration 2004 issued this week as a national event. In 2021, 9 May to 15 May was allocated as the preparedness week.
Ever since then, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), along with National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other agencies have organized a thematic week to aware people living in affected or coastal areas.
In 2020, the American government recorded that out of 30 storms passing the country’s territory, 11 of them were severe and destructive. They also noted that it was a groundbreaking record noted since 1996. Then in 2021, Hurricane Henri became the first hurricane to occur after 30 years in the northeast.
Henceforth, in order to protect lives, property, and other collateral damages, Hurricane Preparedness Week is celebrated every year.

Hurricane Preparedness Week Recap 2021 and upcoming 2022
In 2021, USGS, NOAA, and NHC, with other agencies, worked to develop an assertive and accurate medium from which people can access weather information. They aimed to make individuals improve their property, daily lives, community, and resources from the medium which can safeguard them from disasters.
Usually, they focus their target area on coastal communities, Caribbean territories, and often affected places. After which, they provide information and tools to guide against hurricane-led destructions. So in the entire week, they let people know how to ascertain if they live in the affected area. If so, they equip options to keep lives and property safe. They also teach the process of preparing food stock, constructing bunker rooms, survival kits, and others.
In the 2022 preparedness week, President Biden made a proclamation to improve America’s capacity to handle and manage the climatic changes leading to hurricanes. He also noted the loss resulting from Hurricane Henri, Ida, and 2021 being one of the most hurricane-affected years in US history.
Furthermore, he added, the financial and emotional toll taking place in affected areas where mostly low-income citizens reside with little to no preparedness.
“Hurricanes also take an emotional toll — especially on low-income communities and communities of color, who are more likely to live in areas that are vulnerable to climate and weather hazards. I witnessed the aftermath of these storms firsthand in Louisiana, New Jersey, and New York as I walked with survivors through their devastated communities.” - President Biden’s Proclamation on National Hurricane Preparedness Week, 2022
President concluded the proclamation speech pf the preparedness week, which was allocated as 1 Mat to 7 May in 2022, with encouragement to all levels of government for resilience and preparedness.
