He was named the NBA's 'Most Improved Player' after averaging 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocked shots per game in the 1995-96 season. He did not play in the 1996-97 season due to a knee and back injury. He was released by the Washington Wizards on 25 January 1999.


Muresan is a Romanian retired NBA player. He formerly played basketball for the Washington Bullets and the New Jersey Nets.

Who is Gheorghe Muresan?

Gheorghe Muresan, a.k.a. Ghitza, was born on 14 February 1971 in Tritenii de Jos, Romania. He began playing basketball professionally at the age of 14 after being recruited by a local club. He got the opportunity when he visited a dentist who was also a basketball referee. 

And, at age 17, he won his first national title with the Universitatea Cluj in 1992. He then won the French Cup with Élan Béarnais Pau-Orthez during the 1992-1993 season. 

In 1993, Muresan moved to Washington to pursue his career in the NBA. On 30 June 1993, he was drafted in the second round (30th pick) of the 1993 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets (rebranded as Washington Wizards in 1997). 

He was named the NBA's 'Most Improved Player' after averaging 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocked shots per game in the 1995-96 season. He did not play in the 1996-97 season due to a knee and back injury. He was released by the Washington Wizards on 25 January 1999.

On 3 May 1999, he signed a contract with the New Jersey Nets. He played the final 31 games of his NBA career with the New Jersey Nets for two seasons. 

He retired from his NBA career in 2001 because of his back surgery. After retiring from the NBA, he played basketball for one season with Pau-Orthez in the French league.

In 2004, Muresan founded Giant Basketball Academy, an Ashburn, Virginia-based basketball club devoted to teaching the fundamentals of basketball. Further, he is the vice president of the Romanian Basketball Federation.

Height

Muresan is regarded as one of the tallest players in NBA history; he stands 7 feet 7 inches in height which is 2.31 meters. And his towering height was the result of gigantism, a rare growth hormone condition caused by a tumor on the pituitary gland. In addition to that, his ailment was not genetic as his father was 5-foot-9, and his late mother was 5-foot-7.

Personal Life

Muresan has been married to his wife Liliana since 1994. The couple has two sons together. Their first son, George was born on 23 April 1998, and their second son, Victor was born on 22 October 2000. Among them, Liliana stands on the shortest height of 6 feet 1 inch.  

George and Victor both followed the footsteps of their father and pursued careers in basketball. Both of them have played for the Georgetown University Hoyas.
