Who is Frank Vogel?
Frank Paul Vogel was born on 21 June 1973 in Wildwood Crest, New Jersey. He attended Wildwood High School in Wildwood, New Jersey. He then went to Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where he played Division III college basketball for three years.
Vogel later transferred to the University of Kentucky and became a student manager to learn to coach. He also played on the junior varsity team in 1996. From Kentucky, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
After graduation, he kicked off his career in the NBA as the Wildcats video coordinator for the Boston Celtics under head coach Rick Pitino. After his stint as a video coordinator, Vogel became an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics in the 2001-2002 seasons. He served in the role for three seasons. Frank then became an assistant coach of the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2004-2005 season and the Indiana Pacers from the 2007-2008 to 2010-2011 season.
On 30 January 2011, Indiana Pacers hired him as an interim head coach after head coach Jim O’Brien was fired from the team. Vogel led the team to its first playoff berth since 2006 with a 20-18 record. He officially became the head coach of the Indiana Pacers in July 2011. Frank Vogel served as the head coach of the Indiana Pacers for six seasons and led the team to a compiled 250-181 record. During that time, he won the ‘Eastern Conference of the Month’ awards four times.
Vogel then became the head coach of Orlando Magic on 20 May 2016. Under his coaching, Orlando Magic won 54 games and lost 110 games during two seasons. He was ultimately fired by Orlando Magic on 12 April 2018.
A year later, on 11 May 2019, he became the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. He led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 52-19 record and an NBA championship in his first season. In his second season, he led the team to a 42-30 record. On 6 August 2021, he signed a one-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers.
