Born on 19 July 1945 in New York City, New York, Edwin Arthur Schlossberg is 76 years old as of 2021. He received his bachelor's degree from Columbia College, Columbia University, in 1967. Later, Schlossberg earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in science and literature from Columbia University in New York. During his graduate studies at Columbia University, he started making visual art after getting inspired by mid-century artists and designers, including John Cage.
Besides, working with designer and architect, R. Buckminster Fuller eventually inspired his design career. Then, in 1977, he founded and became the principal designer of ESI Design, a New York-based design studio. The studio transforms places into dynamic experiences by designing interactive environments for exploration, learning, communication, and collaboration, according to its website.
In 1978, Schlossberg designed one of the world's first interactive museums, The Brooklyn Children's Museum. He subsequently established his design studio as one of the top firms in the field of experience design. Under his leadership, the design studio has also created museums, retail and corporate spaces, and multi-player game environments for many brands, corporations, and cultural institutions, including eBay, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate, and Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. In addition, in 2002, he was singled out as 'a leader in interactive design' by Wired magazine.
In February 2020, ESI Design was acquired by the global architecture and design firm NBBJ. After the acquisition, Schlossberg started serving as the executive leader of NBBJ's experience design practice and New York experience design studio, ESI Design.
