Who Is Dustin May?

Dustin Jake May is a professional US baseball pitcher for the Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the third round of the 2016 MLB Draft, and he made his main league debut in 2019. On the verge of having a breakthrough season, he had to wait because May was scheduled to have Tommy John surgery in 2021. The pitcher underwent surgery in May 2021.

Early Life

Dustin May was born Dustin Jake May on 6 September 1997i in Justin, Texas, USA. He finished his early high school education at Northwest High School in Justin, Texas.

MLB and AZL Dodgers

At Northwestern High School, he played junior baseball and committed himself to play at the college level. May could play for the Texas Tech Red Raiders in just a few months. However, once he was drawn up in the Major League Baseball Draft 2016, his decision changed. In particular, May was selected in the third and 101 rounds by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He signed a million-dollar bonus contract with the Dodgers when he was a teenager.

The Dodgers were quick to put May in the field and get that blow. He debuted in MLB the next year with the AZL Dodgers, spending the entire season. In 30.1 innings pitched in his first game, he had a 3.86 ERA (Erand Run Average).

In 2017, May was a member of the Great Lakes Loons and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball teams. In just 25 games, he went 9-6 with a 3.63 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP (Walks plus hits per inning pitched.) On 3 August 2017, he debuted with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing five runs. The Quakes drafted the May following year and named it to the California League’s postseason all-star team. Over time, he improved his skills, and by the end of September, he made 23 starts with a 3.39 ERA. 

May’s 2019 started in Tulsa. He had been selected for both the Texas League All-Star Game and the All-Star Futures Game in the middle of the season. Then, at the end of June, the pitcher was promoted to the AAA Oklahoma City Dodger.

Professional Career

On 2 August 2019, May was called up to make his MLB debut against the San Diego Padres, as first reported by ESPN. The Dodgers opened their first August training camp to prepare for the postseason in 2019. Against the Oakland Athletics, he pitched six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight batters. At his second start of the month, he faced the Colorado Rockies and navigated some treacherous territory. He only lasted 4 1/3 innings, but he only allowed two runs while scattering seven hits. His six strikeouts and one walk boosted his stellar K/BB ratio. May struck out 18 batters in two starts against the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, walking just one batter per game.

Injury 

Dustin May was on the verge of having a breakthrough season but had to wait as the Dodgers’ pitcher was due to undergo Tommy John surgery. On 11 May 2021, Dr. Neal ElAttrache had been appointed to conduct the surgery in Los Angeles.

According to the recovery timetable, May could be back in time for the 2022 season’s stretch run, which is usually between 12 and 16 months. However, the injury to May reveals a more significant issue in Major League Baseball. His boss expressed concern about his serious health problems. “You never want to lose anyone for the season, certainly not a player like Dustin, who was taking the ball every fifth day and logging valuable innings,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. When news broke about May’s injury, their first thought wasn’t they lost a great pitcher, but they weren’t much worried about it. “I feel for him, most important,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “For our ball club, it’s a big blow. But we have a lot of talented players and we just have to find a way to fill that void.”

Personal Life

Dustin May announced his engagement in late 2020 with a photo spread. May posed in a 10-gallon cowboy hat, which he wore throughout the picture session, and the ring box was also a miniature cowboy hat. Also, he made a post on Twitter in December 2020, with a caption; “12/10/2020 will always hold a special place in my heart! You’re stuck with me forever millz! I love you.”
