Fortunately enough, he gave the audition his all. He became more enthusiastic about his role when he learned that his character would be coming out as gay during the beginning of season eight. He realized that it might inspire and empower people of all ages and backgrounds. 


Daniel Kyri is a Chicago-born actor popularly known for his role in the NBC drama series, Chicago Fire. He is also a Jeff-nominated actor and is the director, writer, and producer of The T mini TV series. 

Who is Daniel Kyri?

Daniel Kyri is popularly known for his role as a rookie firefighter, Darren Ritter on NBC's drama series, Chicago Fire. Likewise, he is featured on Hulu's award-winning film, Henry Gamble's Birthday Party. 

Although Kyri has not confirmed, according to the internet, he is 26 years old, was born on 21 March 1995. He identifies as a queer black man and was born and raised on the South Side of Chicago.

Kyri is a writer and an actor. He is also popular in theatre. He made his Theatre debut while starring in Charles Smith's globe-spanning coming-of-age story Objects in the Mirror in 2017. He was nominated for a 'Joseph Jefferson Equity Award' for 'Principal Actor' for the same role in 2017. Likewise, he gained much positive response for his role as Hamlet in The Gift's 2018 production of Shakespeare's play. 

Followed by that, Kyri first gained recognition when he began playing the role of Ritter in the series Chicago Fire. He has been a part of the show since 2018. Additionally, since 2018, Kyri has appeared in the television mini-series, The T. 

'Chicago Fire' 

Chicago Fire was first debuted in 2012 and has aired a total of 10 seasons. In the show, Kyri started playing the recurring role of Darren Ritter after being introduced in Season 7. Eventually, he became a member of the central cast in Season 9. He has also been featured on Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med, playing the same role as Ritter.

Kyri was heavily affected by the underrepresentation of people of color and transgender communities in major network dramas and movies. So, he teamed up with Bea Cordelia to write, produce, direct, and star in the mini tv series, The T

The series is about a queer black man and a white transgender woman who navigate love and friendship in Chicago. The web series first premiered in 2018, and it is the first show from which Kyri has earned the title of director, producer, and writer. 

Is Daniel Kyri gay?

Daniel Kyri is queer. On 30 June 2021, Kyri posted on Instagram for pride month and identified himself as queer.  On many occasions, Kyri has mentioned being grateful to his community and family for their support as he experienced hardships such as poverty, institutionalized racism, lack of resources for education, and homophobia throughout his life.

In addition, he has been open about his struggles regarding being a black gay man and feeling unwelcomed for it.

Furthermore, in an interview, Kyri talked about the connection he felt to his character, Darren Ritter. Since the nature of Ritter is also queer, he explained that he could give justice to the role because of their resemblance.
