He was born on 6 May 1983 in Juazeiro, Bahia, Brazil, to a family of farmers. His father was a football fan, so he started playing as a child. His father even formed and managed a football team in their community where Alves initially played as a winger. But his father re-positioned him as a right-back since he couldn't score goals. He continued playing from that position to date. 

He began his professional football career as a right-back in the football club Esporte Clube Bahia where he played from 2001 to 2003. Then, leaving Bahia, he joined Sevilla F.C. and played for the team till 2008. After that, he played for F.C. Barcelona from 2008 till 2016 and for Juventus F.C. from 2016 to 2017. He next joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and remained till 2019. And then, since 2019, he has been playing for S. Paulo F.C. as of 2021. 

Alves qualified for the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship, where he left an impact as Brazil won the competition. He was rated the championship's third-best player.
