Who is Christian Cooke?
Christian Louis Cooke is an English actor born on 15 September 1987 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, UK. He wanted to be an actor since he was nine years old, and he debuted at ten in a production of Bedazzled at the Bingley Arts Centre.
Cooke's first appearance on television was in an advertisement for Birds Eye beef burgers. He spent most of his early teens in the TV series Where the Heart Is, a soap opera set in his hometown from 2000 to 2006. He made his feature film debut as Freddie Taylor in Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's Cemetery Junction in 2010.
Since then, Cooke has appeared in several TV series and movies like Magic City (TV series 2012-2013), Love, Rosie (movie 2014), Stonemouth (TV mini-series 2015), A Rose in Winter (film 2018), Barkskins (TV series 2020), Soft Voice (TV series 2021), and more. Direction
Christian Cooke's directorial debut, Edith, is a short adaptation of Robinson's novel. The short follows Jake, an older man, who has doubts about his deceased wife, Edith, and, as a result, about his son's legitimacy. In addition, the film explores the themes of love and regret in later life.
Edith was filmed in Leeds and starred Michelle Fairley and 'BAFTA' and multi-award winner Peter Mullan, whom Cooke met on the set of the TV series Stonemouth. They also raised a crowdfunding campaign alongside the project. It went on to win 'Best Short Film' in the 2017 'Norwich Film Festival'.
In an interview with Interview Magazine in 2017, Cooke explained he had always wanted to make movies, and Edith was his first decent short film, which took him two years to fund and build. He said, "Short films are, 90 percent of the time, non-profit-making. I wanted to do it in a certain way; I didn't want to compromise. I wanted to give it a very filmic look and shoot with top production value, so it took me a while to get all that in place."
Besides Edith, he also directed another short titled Chandide in 2014. Cooke is also working on his new directorial project, Embers, which is currently in the pre-production phase as of January 2022.
