Boris McGiver was born on 23 January 1962 in Cobleskill, New York. His mother, Ruth Sylvia, was a scenic designer, while his father, John McGiver, was a legendary American actor and producer.
McGiver was raised in a renovated 19th-century Baptist Church. He went to Ithaca School of Music as a French horn major and played it for years. In addition, he also went to SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Albany, Hunter College, and NYU, holding multiple undergraduate degrees in several subjects. While later, he went to NYU Graduate Acting for an MFA.
Besides education, he was interested in space flight and was also listed for the class of 1984 at U.S. Air Force Academy. But he opted out and continued his acting career.
McGiver debuted as a television actor in 1968 on the One Life to Live series. After that, his next role was in 1987 in the movie Ironweed, followed by Little Odessa, New York Undercover, Trinity, Third Watch, Queens Supreme, The Jury, and Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus.
His other credits include The Wire, John Adams, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Law & Order, The Good Wife, Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, The Carrie Diaries, Person of Interest, Boardwalk Empire, Allegiance, The Blacklist, House of Cards, For Life, Servant and more recently Evil.

John Irwin McGiver was born on 5 November 1913 in New York City. He earned B.A. and Master's degrees in English from Fordham, Columbia, and Catholic Universities and spent his early years as a theatre and speech teacher at Christopher Columbus High School in the Bronx.

During the 1930s, he tried to be an actor or work as a director for the Irish Repertory Theatre, but because of financial strains, he enlisted in the army. He volunteered and served in World War II with the United States 7th Armored Division in Europe. He also fought at the Battle of the Bulge). After that, John returned to teaching theater while also resuming acting. Then he married Chicago scenic designer Ruth Shmigelsky in 1947 and moved into a restored 19th-century former Baptist church.
He is known for his numerous acting roles: Th Gazebo, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, The DuPont Show of the Month: Oliver Twist, and his show Many Happy Returns.
John passed away on 9 September 1975 in West Fulton, New York, after suffering a heart attack. He had ten children in total, including Boris McGiver.
