Koldyke completed a post-graduate year at Choate Rosemary Hall after graduating from high school. He got a bachelor's degree in English and was a quarterback for the football team at Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1991.

He was initially a high school English teacher and football coach in Chicago.

His father is a retired investment banker who founded Frontenac Company in Chicago and is a life trustee of Northwestern University. Koldyke is also a family member that owns Laird Norton Company, an investment firm with roots in the Pacific Northwest timber industry, through his mother, Patricia.

In 2021, Koldyke appeared in the Peacock sitcom Rutherford Falls portraying Lawrence 'Duz' Rutherford. The show is a comedy about two lifelong friends, Nathan Rutherford (Even Helms) and Reagan Wells (Jana Schmieding), whose friendship is tested when their tiny town is devastated by a crisis. When the mayor chooses to move a statue of Nathan's ancestor because car drivers regularly smash into it, Nathan embarks on a mission to keep the figure in its original location, forcing Reagan to choose between devotion to her buddy and the Minishonka Nation.
