It was only in 2017, information on Charlie’s son, Archie Heaton, surfaced in the media before the release of the second season of Stranger Things.
The year, in October, Charlie was stopped by the United States Customs office while he was flying from London to L.A., right before the premiere of the second season of the show. A white dust-like substance (cocaine) was found in his belongings, which alerted the sniffer dogs at the airport. He was then questioned and barred from entering the USA.
After the information caught the media, he made a formal statement informing that he didn’t want to harm the show’s reputation and he would see through the situation. He wrote, “My planned travel to the U.S. last week was affected by an issue at U.S. immigration, and I am working to rectify it as soon as possible. I do want to clarify that I was not arrested or charged with a crime and cooperated fully with the U.S. officials at LAX. I’m sorry to all the fans and my Stranger Things family for missing the premiere. We are all so proud of this season and I would never want this story to negatively impact the show.”
And his test results eventually arrived, which evidenced that he was not intoxicated or under the influence of any drugs while traveling.
Along with the popularity of the substance incident, THe Dailymail also reported that Heaton and Matsuura had a son together.
After the revelation, Charlie did not make any formal statements to them; however, he talked about the drugs allegations on retrospective, “It was hard. Everything happened so fast, and I hadn’t come to terms with the fact that I was famous. When something steps in from the work you are doing and breaks into your personal life...you feel kind of vulnerable. All of a sudden it becomes a very big story and it gets really blown out of proportion.”
