Who is Anthony Lynn?
Anthony Ray Lynn is an American former NFL running back and professional football coach. Lynn was born in Texas, the USA, on 21 December 1968. Lynn spent six seasons in the NFL as a running back, mainly with the Denver Broncos. He was a member of the Broncos squad that won two Super Bowls in a row, in Super Bowl XXXII and Super Bowl XXXIII, as a reserve.
Upon retiring as a professional player, Lynn began his professional football coaching career in 2000. First, he joined as a special teams assistant for the Denver Broncos. Subsequently, Lynn served as the running backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, he left Jacksonville after being promoted to special teams coach because of a coaching staff shakeup by head coach Jack Del Rio. He then worked as a running back coach for Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns.
Lynn was named the New York Jets' assistant head coach/running backs coach on 1 February 2012, under head coach Rex Ryan. He was later interviewed for the head coach job after Ryan left in January 2015. However, when he did not get the job as head coach of the New York Jets, he followed Rex Ryan to the Buffalo Bills, where he held the same position.
On 12 January 2017, Lynn was hired as the Los Angeles Chargers' new head coach, the same day that owner Dean Spanos announced the Chargers' relocation from San Diego to Los Angeles. His hiring was confirmed by the Chargers on the team's website one day later, on 13 January. Lynn was the first African-American head coach in the franchise's 56-year history.
Lynn led the Chargers to a 12–4 record in his second season as head coach, earning the team's first playoff berth since 2013. The Chargers then defeated the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round, 23–17, before falling to the eventual Super Bowl LIII champion New England Patriots in the Divisional Round, 41–28. He completed his tenure with a 33–31 regular-season record and a 1–1 postseason record with the Chargers.
On 23 January 2021, The Detroit Lions hired Lynn as their offensive coordinator.
