Cabrera is a communication graduate from Washington State University. She began her career as a reporter in affiliate channels and networks in 2005 and eventually became the correspondent of the CNN news in 2013.

In 2017, she was promoted to anchor. She landed in the main anchor position at the network’s weekend prime time program CNN Newsroom in 2018.

Early Life

Cabrera was born to immigrant parents Roland and Judith Cabrera. She belongs to the Mexican ethnicity but was born and in Denver, Colorado.

She studied at the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication under Washington State University from 2000 to 2004 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Foreign Languages and Cultures.

In 2019, she was inducted on the ‘Murrow Hall of Achievement’ for her prominent contribution to society as a Washington State Alumni. In addition, she was also recruited on the Murrow Professional Advisory Board. 

Career

Cabrera initially worked at the NBC affiliate KHQ-TV and FOX affiliate KAYU-TV as an anchor and reporter from 2005 to 2009. She then became an anchor at the ABC affiliate KMGH-TV 7 News in Denver.

CNN News

In 2013, Cabrera joined CNN as a Denver-based correspondent. At CNN in Denver, she reported national and international stories, including her exclusive interviews with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney and the Police Chief Darren Wilson, during the hearing of Wilson’s case by the grand jury. She also conducted an extensive report on the marijuana legalization movement in Colorado which resulted in the recall of thousands of pot pesticides in Colorado.

In 2017, she was promoted to the position of anchor in New York. It led her to cover the DACA issue exclusively in 2017 and 2018. Her coverage included interviews with diplomats and senators and interactions with those directly related to the issue. 

Further, she delivered nine hours a week of news. Her extensive news presentation included breaking news on the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Hurricanes Harvey and Maria, the church shooting in Southerland Springs, and the terror attack on the London Bridge.

In 2018, Cabrera became the CNN Weekend Prime Time Programming anchor, which landed her own segment CNN Newsroom with Ana Cabrera. It airs every Sunday from 5-8 pm and Saturdays from 3-6 pm and 7-9 pm Eastern Time, from New York.

Husband

Cabrera married Benjamin Nielson on 11 September 2005. Nielson and Cabrera studied high school together and have been together since then. However, neither Nielson nor Cabrera has disclosed the former’s professional and personal identity.

Family

Cabrera gave birth to their first child, son Jack in 2011 and second child, daughter Maria in January 2016.
