Julie Beth Ertz, known as Julie Ertz, is an American soccer player. She started playing soccer from her schooldays, playing for Sereno Soccer Club. During her college life, she played for Santa Clara Broncos and received the West Coast Conference (WCC) 'Freshman of the Year award'. Later, Ertz represented the United States in international competition in under-20, under-30 categories, and senior levels. Her defensive playing led the United States to win the World Cup Championship in 2015. It got her a place in the FIFA Women's World Cup All-Star Team. In 2017, Ertz changed her position as a midfielder. She was also named the 'U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year 2017'.

Early Life and Education 

Julie Ertz was born on April 6, 1992, in Mesa, Arizona, the USA. Born as the eldest child to David Johnston and Kristi Johnston, Julie Ertz and her younger sister Melanie grew up in a Christian family. 

Ertz was introduced to soccer by her father, after which she began training in the regional American Youth Soccer Organization. Then, she played for the Sereno Soccer Club in Phoenix.

Ertz completed her schooling at Dobson High School in Mesa in 2010. Throughout her high school years, she volunteered as a student athletic trainer. However, Ertz couldn't play soccer for her high school team as she played for the Sereno Soccer Club at that time. Following high school, she went to Santa Clara University and majored in Communications.

Early Journey

At the university, Ertz started playing as a freshman for the Santa Clara Broncos's female soccer team. She played 20 matches for her college team and won the WCC 'Freshman of the Year award'.

Ertz got into the First-Team Soccer America All-Freshman Team and WCC All-Freshman team. She also became a part of the All-WCC Second-Team and National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-West Region Second-Team. In 2011, while doing her second-year college, Ertz became the WCC Hermann Trophy's semifinalist while playing for the Broncos. The same year, she became a part of the All-WCC First-Team and NSCAA All-America First-Team.

National and International Journey

In 2012, Ertz was selected in the under-20 youth soccer team of the United States and made her first big international success. She scored her first international goal against Switzerland in the La Manga Tournament that year.

The same year, Ertz was selected for the 2012 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, captaining the team. At the tournament, she started every game and marshaled a defense that defeated strong opponents Korea DPR, Nigeria, and Germany. It made her win the Bronze Ball as the third-best player of the tournament. 

In 2013, she moved to the U-23 team and became a part of the USA National Women's Soccer Team.

On January 17, 2014, Chicago Red Stars selected her during the 2014 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft. She debuted for the Red Stars and scored her first goal against the Western New York Flas on April 19. She achieved the NWSL 'Rookie of the Year 2014' for her outstanding performance that season.

During the next season of NWSL, Ertz prepared for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada. On April 14, she got her place in the 23-player list of the United States team to play for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Ertz played every minute of the seven matches, and their team won the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Ertz also earned her place in the FIFA Women's World Cup All-Star Team for her fantastic performance during that tournament. 

In 2016, she attended the training camp for Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. She also became a part of the USA national team to participate in the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament. 

In 2017, she received the 'U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year Award' for the second time. The same year, she changed her position from center-back to center midfielder.

In 2018, Ertz underwent knee surgery and missed the initial part of the 2018 NWSL season. However, she got her place in the NWSL second XI that season. The same year, Ertz also participated in the 2018 SheBelieves Cup, making her debut against Washington Spirit on April 28, 2018. In the following season, she made her first championship appearance for the Red Stars against North Carolina Courage.

Ertz was named the U.S. Soccer Federation's women's 'Player of the Year' on December 13, 2019. 

On March 5, 2020, she became the 40th U.S. female player to hit 100 caps against England.

Personal Life

Ertz is married to American football tight end Zach Ertz. The couple met at a basketball match at Stanford University and started dating two years after their first meeting. They dated for four years and got married on March 26, 2017, at the Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, California.

Charity Work

Ertz and her husband started a charity called Ertz Family Foundation to create children's opportunities in sports and education. They create scholarships for kids through the foundation, develop an SAT preparation, college readiness program for athletes, and many more.
