Who is Anne Stringfield?

Anne Stringfield is an American writer, former editor, and fact-checker for The New Yorker magazine. She also worked as a freelance writer for Vogue magazine and reviewed art and off-Broadway plays.

Stringfield first contacted her future husband and a popular comedian Steve Martin while she was a fact-checker at The New Yorker. They established their first conversation after Stringfield was assigned to check Martin's one of the comedy pieces. They talked over the phone frequently, and eventually, their relationship grew beyond just a professional one. They also shared a mutual love for art as she used to review art and plays. Meanwhile, Martin was a passionate art collector and a trustee of the Los Angeles Museum of Art. Nonetheless, they met for the first time only a year after they first got introduced to each other and started dating in the mid-2000s.

Stringfield came into the limelight when she became the second wife of Martin in July 2007. They married at a surprise ceremony, and it was attended by Hollywood celebrities, including Tom Hanks and Diane Keaton.

The pair welcomed their first child, Mary, in December 2012.

Early Life and Education

Anne Stringfield, full name, Anne Powell Stringfield, was born in 1972 in Pensacola, Florida, United States. She was born to Dr. James Stringfield, a pulmonologist, and Margo Stringfield, an archeologist at the University of West Florida. Born as the eldest child to her parents, she has a younger sister.

After completing high school at Pensacola High School in 1990, Stringfield attended Davidson College and graduated in 1994.

Career

After graduation, Stringfield moved to New York to pursue her career as a writer. Soon, she was hired as a staff writer at The New Yorker magazine. She worked as an editor and fact-checker of the magazine. Later, she also worked as a freelance writer for the Vogue magazine for some time. She earned a name for herself by reviewing art and off-Broadway plays.

Beginning of Relationship with Steve Martin

Stringfield got introduced to Steve Martin in the early 2000s while she was a fact-checker at The New Yorker magazine. Their connection was facilitated when she was assigned to check one of Martin's comedy pieces. Even though Martin was introduced to Stringfield quite unexpectedly, they started talking to each other regularly, and soon their relationship blossomed into something more than just a professional relationship.

It took a year for them to meet for the first time after getting introduced over the phone. "We talked on the phone for a year before we even met," Martin said. On their first acquaintance, Martin was allured by her beauty and even described her as "violet by a mossy stone," taking reference from William Wordsworth's writing.

Over time, they got to know each other well and began dating in the mid-2000s, despite having 26 years of age difference.

Marriage with Steve Martin

After dating for about three years, Stringfield, 35, married Steve Martin, 61, on 28 July 2007, at Martin's Los Angeles home. Their marriage was a shock to their friends and family members since they wedded at a surprise ceremony and announced themselves a husband and a wife during a party. Martin had invited approximately 75 guests, including actors Tom Hanks, Diane Keaton, Carl Reiner, and Eugene Levy, to his home for a "party." But, he didn't tell them that he would marry Stringfield at the party. The couple's ensuing nuptials completely surprised the guests.

The ceremony was made official by former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey. Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live, was the best man at the ceremony, and Stringfield's sister was the designated Bridesmaid. After marriage, the newlywed couple chose to go to the West Indies as their honeymoon destination.

The marriage was the first for Stringfield and the second for Martin. Martin had previously married in 1986 with actress Victoria Tennant, whom he divorced after about eight years of marriage.

Daughter Mary

In December 2012, 40-year-old Stringfield gave birth to their first daughter, Mary, making 67-year-old Martin a father for the first time. When Mary was four years old, Martin said in an interview in 2017 that having a young child at 71 is "fantastic." He also confessed that he would have been a lousy parent if he had a child earlier.

He explained, "I think if I'd had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career." He also didn't miss to praise his wife Stringfield and enjoyed his company with her. "I am very forthcoming with her, and it's great," he said and added, "She's giving me way more than I'm giving her."
